Summer on the Sunshine Coast is on its way, and that means warm, sticky sessions inside the hall at Coolum State High. Pickleball looks gentle from the sideline, but anyone who has played a long rally at the kitchen line knows it gets the heart pumping.
At Carpe Dink'em we want everyone playing for years, not just for one big night. So here are the three things that keep you on court: stay hydrated, know your limits, and above all, have fun.
Stay hydrated
Water is your best performance booster, and it's free. Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired, slow your reactions and take the edge off your focus. In pickleball, that's the difference between a crisp dink and one that floats up for your opponent to smash.
You lose fluid through sweat even when it doesn't feel hot, and our humid Queensland evenings make it easy to fall behind. By the time you feel thirsty, you're already a little low.
Simple habits that help:
- Drink before you arrive. Have a glass or two of water in the hour before your session.
- Bring your own bottle. Keep it courtside and take a few sips at every game change.
- Sip, don't gulp. Small, regular drinks are easier on the stomach than a big chug at the end.
- Top up electrolytes on long or hot nights. If you're playing for a couple of hours or sweating heavily, a sports drink or electrolyte tablet can help replace lost salts.
- Go easy on alcohol and lots of caffeine beforehand. Both can leave you drier than you think.
- Rehydrate afterwards. Keep drinking once you're home, especially if you've had a big night.
Watch for the warning signs: headache, dizziness, cramps, unusual fatigue, or feeling light-headed when you stand up. If you notice any of these, step off court, drink some water and cool down. If you feel unwell, tell your session host straight away.
Know your limits
Pickleball is wonderfully addictive, and "just one more game" is a phrase we hear a lot. But the best players aren't the ones who never stop. They're the ones who stay injury-free and keep coming back week after week.
- Warm up first. A few minutes of gentle movement, side steps and easy dinking gets your muscles and joints ready. Cold calves and shoulders are the usual suspects for strains.
- Sit out when you need to. Taking a game off isn't weakness. Our round robins are built so you can rest and rejoin without fuss.
- Listen to your body. Sharp pain, a joint that doesn't feel right, chest discomfort or shortness of breath are signals to stop, not push through.
- Don't chase every ball. Lunging, backpedalling for lobs and diving are where most falls happen. Let the odd one go; your partner will understand.
- Build up gradually. New to the game or coming back from a break? Start with shorter sessions and add more as your fitness returns.
- Wear the right shoes. Proper court shoes with lateral support make a big difference to ankles and knees.
If something doesn't feel right during a session, let your host know. Everyone at Carpe Dink'em would much rather you sat one out than missed the next month.
Most of all, have fun
This is the big one. Our name says it all: seize the day, and enjoy the dink.
Pickleball is one of the most social sports around. You'll play with and against different people every session, swap stories between games and probably laugh at yourself more than once. That's the point.
- Celebrate the good shots, yours and theirs. A "great shot!" across the net costs nothing and makes everyone's night.
- Laugh off the misses. Everyone hits the net, mistimes a volley or calls the score wrong. It's part of the game.
- Welcome new faces. Remember your first session? A friendly hello goes a long way.
- Play the game, not the scoreboard. Winning is nice, but the rallies, the people and the cuppa afterwards are what bring us back.
When you're well hydrated and playing within your limits, you're free to relax and enjoy it. Fun and looking after yourself go hand in hand.
