The Sunshine Coast isn't short on things to do. Beaches, hinterland walks, markets, breweries, brunch. But if you've done the rounds and you're after something a bit different — something social, active and genuinely fun — it might be time to pick up a paddle.
Why Pickleball Works as a Social Activity
Plenty of activities are "social" in name only. You turn up, do your thing, and leave without really talking to anyone. Pickleball is the opposite. It's played as doubles on a small court, so you're never more than a few metres from three other people — and the game naturally gets everyone chatting, laughing and high-fiving.
It's also quick to learn. Most people are rallying within their first half hour, which means you spend your time playing and having fun, not standing around feeling lost.
You Don't Need to Bring a Friend (But You Can)
One of the best things about pickleball is that you can turn up on your own. Our sessions run as a round robin — you rotate partners and opponents every game, so by the end of the morning you've played with most of the room. New to the area? Recently retired? Just want to meet some locals? It's one of the easiest ways to do it.
Of course, it's also a great thing to do with a partner, mate or workmate. You can book guests in alongside you when you book your spot.
Social Saturdays — Built for Exactly This
If you're after the most relaxed way in, Social Saturdays is the one. It runs every Saturday from 8:30 to 10:30 AM at Coolum State High School, and it's open to all levels — complete beginners, returning players and seasoned regulars all mix in together.
It's indoors, so the weather never cancels your plans. No sunburn, no wind, no rain-outs. And it finishes in time for a coffee or a swim at Coolum afterwards.
What It Costs
A casual session is $15. If you catch the bug (most people do), a 10-session pass is $120 — just $12 a session. Not sure about the cost breakdown? We've written a full guide on what pickleball actually costs on the Sunshine Coast.
What to Bring
- Comfortable clothes you can move in
